Wilderness Horse Camp 2010
Twisp River

Wilderness Horse Camp Trail RideTwo weeks to choose from

July 25-August 1
August 1-8

Location: Twisp River, Washington

Directions: If you are coming from the south and go thru Moses Lake or from Spokane, take Highway 17 to Bridgeport, Brewster, Pateros in that order. Halfway between Bridgeport and Brewster, at the stop sign, turn left onto Highway 97 going to Brewster. If you come thru Wenatchee, go north on Hwy 97 to Pateros and turn west on Hwy 153.

At Pateros (pron: Pa-tare-es) turn west on Hwy 153. Go about 34 miles to Twisp, Washington then follow these directions:

In Twisp, WA, at the intersection of State Rt. 20 and Twisp Rd (Twisp River Rec Area sign, also a bank and feed store at the intersection where you turn) turn left, west, take Twisp Rd. west 18 miles to a "Y" intersection (Twisp R Horse Camp sign). Bear left onto Forest Rd 4435 and go 0.2 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right, staying on Rd 4435 and go 3.8 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign and go 0.2 miles to campground.

NOTE: Forest Rd 4435 is gravel, single-lane with turnouts.

A current Northwest Forest Pass is required of every vehicle that will be camped at Twisp River Horse Camp. Save yourself a drive back into town on Monday by getting one ahead of time, don't wait till the last minute. If you are age 62 or over, your Golden Age Pass will work. Both, a Golden Age Pass and a NWFP can usually be purchased at any Federal agency but for sure at any Forest Service, National Park Service, or BLM office. Golden Age passes are $10 and good for life after age 62. A Northwest Forest Pass is about $30 and good only for that calendar year. Hank's Market in Twisp will not be selling the NWFP this summer as in the past.

Packing suggestions: Plan to dress in layers, and keep in mind all types of weather, from hot to cold to rainy. Remember to bring sun screen, lip balm with sunscreen, and insect repellant for yourself and the horses. Come prepared for self-contained camping. Please bring your own drinking water. Any extra water you can bring will be appreciated for the kitchen use.

Along with your horse, please bring feed and everything to meet its needs. Bring all the tack you will need, and have your horse freshly shod. If you are traveling across state lines, be sure to have the Coggins test and health certificates for the horses. All National Forests require Certified weed-free hay, or pellets or cubes.

We ask that as a safety precaution, no dogs be brought to camp.

The meals will be lacto/ovo vegetarian (using eggs and milk), beginning on Sunday evening. We serve coffee substitute (non-caffeinated) hot drinks, but there is also hot water on the fire if you wish to bring your own coffee. Bring your daily saddle bag lunches that you will eat out on the trail. The camp provides a large breakfast and dinner daily. Three meals will be provided on Saturday. Bring your own eating utensils, plate, bowl and cup. You will want to bring your lawn chair to enjoy the campfire.

Remember your camera and binoculars as well.
