Carl Wilkens
When genocide broke out in Rwanda in 1994, Carl Wilkens was the only American to remain in the country, even after the UN officially pulled out. As director of ADRA in Rwanda, his fearlessness and generosity made it possible for him to preserve the lives of hundreds of Tutsis- some strangers, some staff, and others friends. In 1996 Carl returned to the States with his wife, Teresa, and in early 2008 he left his job and began traveling full-time across the United States to share what he had witnessed in Rwanda, hoping to inspire others to take action. Since then he has been recognized with several humanitarian awards including a 2005 Medal of Valor from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
